Home Remedies for Indigestion

Have you heard of the word, ‘Dyspepsia’? It is the medical term of ‘Indigestion’ which causes due to secretion of digestive juices in your stomach. Usually, it occurs when we eat fatty foods or spicy foods but it also occurs when we overeat. It can be really worse if a person has GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease), stress, anxiety, ulcers, stomach infection, thyroid disease, IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), obesity, smoking habit and if a person uses certain medicines.

Symptoms of indigestion include bloating, growling stomach, burning sensation in the upper abdomen, gas, abdominal pain, vomiting, acidic taste in the mouth, etc.

Indigestion can be treated easily with few handy kitchen ingredients. If you get the first sign of indigestion then sip some water immediately. This is the simplest remedy as it immediately balances the pH of the gastric juice.

Home Remedies for Indigestion

Here are few easy home remedies that can be used to treat this.

1. Fennel Seeds

These seeds contain volatile oils which reduce nausea and control the flatulence. Dry roast the seeds and grind them well. Sieve them and take a half spoon of it with some water twice a day. You can also drink fennel tea by steeping 2 tsp of crushed fennel seeds in some water. Try to chew them directly in your mouth in case of emergency.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar

Though apple cider vinegar is acidic in nature it can alkalize the gastric juice and cure indigestion. Mix a tablespoon of raw apple cider vinegar and 1 tsp honey in a glass of water and drink it thrice a day.

3. Baking Soda

It is one of the easiest and effective ways to treat indigestion. Mix a half spoon of it in a half glass of water and drink it. It will relieve from bloating.

4. Ginger

It stimulates digestive juices and cures indigestion especially when we overeat food. The easiest way to use it is to sprinkle some salt over a piece of ginger and chew it after meal. Else you can mix two spoons of ginger juice, 1 spoon of lemon juice, a pinch of salt together and drink it with or without water. You can also mix ginger juice with some honey mixed in some warm water and drink it. The other way is to drink ginger tea as well.

5. Herbal Tea

Try drinking a cup of herbal tea after meal to reduce indigestion. Choose any herbal tea bag and prepare a cup of tea and sip it. The best of many are chamomile and peppermint tea.

6. Carom Seeds

These are also known as Bishop’s weed which are well known to treat indigestion, flatulence and diarrhea as well. Grind some carom seeds with dried ginger and take one spoon of this mixture. Add some black pepper along with it to a cup of warm water and drink it twice a day. You can also chew some seeds directly.

7. Coriander Leaves & Seeds

Both coriander leaves and coriander seeds are well-known to cure indigestion, bloating and gas. Take a spoon of roasted and coriander seeds and mix in a glass of buttermilk and have it twice a day. You can also extract the juice from coriander leaves and mix it in buttermilk. You can also use it in food while cooking.

8. Cinnamon

It can relieve cramps and bloating. Prepare a cup of cinnamon tea by just steeping few pieces of cinnamon or some cinnamon powder in some warm water and drink it.

9. Cumin Seeds

Cumin is well known to treat indigestion, diarrhea, flatulence and nausea. Mix a spoon of roasted cumin seeds in a glass of water and drink it twice a day. If your symptoms are heavy then take powder of roasted cumin seeds and mix with some black pepper in a glass of buttermilk and have it thrice a day.

10. Basil Leaves

Basil leaves can cure acid reflux and intestinal gas along with indigestion. Mix a tablespoon of basil leaves in some water and steep for 10 minutes. You can drink it thrice a day. Else mix 5 to 6 ground basil leaves, a pinch of sea salt and black pepper powder in some plain yogurt and have it thrice a day.

These 10 ingredients can be easily found anywhere and is always available in your kitchen. Whenever you feel the symptoms of indigestion, use any of these simple home remedies for some relief. If it prolongs then it is suggested to use the remedies for few days. However, if the problem is severe then it is better to visit a doctor.
