Alternative treatments are now increasingly able to target and treat specific illnesses and conditions, either in conjunction with mainstream treatments or by themselves.
According to this report, researchers have found that traditional Chinese medicine can increase effectiveness of cancer treatment. Huang Qin Tang is a formulation containing roots, fruit and other plant extracts that has been used literally for ages to treat nausea, indigestion etc.
When a person undergoes chemo, healthy cells as well as cancerous cells are typically killed causing a number of negative side effects, which the traditional Chinese formulations could help ease, possibly by lining the intestines and helping in quicker recovery. Also it was seen to reduce inflammation and hence help in reducing tumors.
In another study, it was found that Tai chi helped those with Fibromyalgia, the chronic pain disorder that results in psychological issues and physical problems such as stiffness, pain, insomnia etc.
The practice of Tai Chi, which involves breathing exercises, meditation and slow measured movements, is known to reduce stress and facilitate relaxation and also help in pain management.
The study found that the practice of Tai Chi helped people record dramatic improvement in their symptoms related to pain. Though the study has been termed “thorough but not definitive” the findings are still significant.
