Shiatsu is a technique that works on fingers and palm of the hands.
The meaning of shiatsu is “finger pressure” and it is originated in Japan.
This type of bodywork is also described as a finger pressure massage.
This massaging therapy involves application of pressure to your body using fingers, thumbs and palms.
The main aim shiatsu massage is to stimulate your body by freeing blockages that prevent the qi or energy from reaching affected areas. Shiatsu uses same knowledge that is used in acupuncture, acupressure and some other pressure based therapies and it is mainly based on the holistic system of traditional Chinese medicine.

Precautions before taking shiatsu massage treatment:
All of you are not eligible to take shiatsu. It is not recommended in some conditions, like:
- After the surgery
- It can not be performed on inflamed skin, tumors, areas of recent fractures, unhealed wounds, abdominal hernia, open wounds, rash, skin disease, etc.
- Immediately after eating the meal
- Immediately after chemotherapy or radiation
- If you have heart disease, check with your doctor before taking shiatsu.
Criticisms of shiatsu massage:
- If this therapy can be performed forcefully it can cause some injuries including nerve damage, bruising and other adverse effects.
- It is not suitable for all type of people.
Shiatsu along with some other pressure based therapies can give promising relief for many medical conditions, especially those related with stress. These therapies have shown to be most effective in controlling, reducing pain, and promoting well-being and health.
